Bean Rock Lighthouse (1871)

Bean Rock stands on a group of rocks opposite North Head at the entrance to Waitemata harbour, Auckland.

The Waitemata harbour was surveyed in 1840 by Lt. P. Fisher aboard the HMS Herald with assistance from P. C. D. Bean the master of the vessel, after which Bean Rock is named. The local maori named the rock "Te Toka a Kapetawa" and the legend is that a chief named Tara marooned his brother-in-law there.

During the 1840's a day maker was erected on the rock, but by the 1867 gold rush a more substantial light was needed. Marine Engineer James Balfour recommended a principal harbour light be erected on Bean Rock and a screw pile light be erected on a sand spit in Ponui Passage.

Designed by engineer James Stewart, construction begun on the Bean Rock lighthouse in 1870. The work was completed in 8 months by Auckland builder William Cameron. The design was an open framework with a cottage on top. First iron foundations were driven deep into the rock then wooden poles in a hexagonal pattern were erected around a central column. Lastly, thirty feet above the water the hexagonal cottage was built. The cottage featured a wrap around verandah and the roof was corrugated iron. A fifth order lens from London was installed which flashed white, red and green to indicate the safe channels.

Hugh Brown the first keeper first lit the light in July, 1871. Mr. Brown, a former crew member of a harbour pilot boat was to stay at the lighthouse for nineteen years until his retirement in 1890 due to ill health.

The keepers families lived in Davenport and transportation to the light was by a small rowing boat.

During 1898-99 major repairs were made to the light.

Bean Rock was the first watched light to lose it's resident keeper. In 1912 the light was automated.

At low tide the rock that it sits on is actually visable.

If you want to search Google Earth, put Bean Rock Lighthouse in the GE search window.

BTW, there is a Bean Rock Brewing Company in Auckland....  and guess what...  they make Bean Rock Lager...

The following shots were taken on my way to work along the scenic drive around the waterfront. There just happened to be a freighter coming down the Rangitoto Channel.  The pics were taken with my cellphone camera which unfortunately does not have a zoom.

The little speck to the left of the freighter is our new friend, Mr Bean.

This is the inner Waitemata Harbour with Rangitoto in the background.  (Volcanic scoria cone - it only arrived on the scene 500 yrs ago).   Want to stay in the channel?  Turn right before you get to Bean Rock.   :icon_salut:

Those two smaller hills are volcanic cones as well.  We have about 60 in the Auckland region.

Vanderburg

Meanwhile a few tiles further up, the Harbour...

The Port of Auckland, Waitemata Harbour.

I have now taken note that The Port of Auckland Container Wharf, has two sets of cranes, a set of three and a set of two...  which of course are available in the CDK series of lots.   8)

Thanks everone for your replies... not sure what the replying ettiquite is here on Simpeg, but I do appreciate all your comments, and I look forward to sharing more nautical related stuff...  I have only been using the CDK lots for a couple of weeks now so, I am sure there is much more to learn and explore with the lots.

Funny how doing a CJ like this actually makes you take notice of the number of cranes at the port...

I will try and get some better pics of Bean Rock Lighthouse for you...  taking a camera with a zoom will probably help - although I must say that my cellphone camera does not do too badly...  those pics are the scaled down sent as a PXT to photobucket version...  if I load them directly to my PC, they are as good as a regular digital camera.

I have recently downloaded an accurate map of the the Auckland Region.

This is the inner Waitemata Harbour.

Now someone said that I needed to leave LOTS of room for MORE CDK stuff so...  next tile over to Auckland City is North Head.

Preparing the port area.  This is an extention of the existing port in the next door tile.

This is the beginning of my first attempt to make a finger wharf.

Hmm...  needs to be wider...  the artic sand mod is useful for seeing when you have the level right.

Zoom 4, God mode leveler strength 2 and a slow steady hand... Grid lines on but for some reason they don't show up at really low sea level elevation..

Yay!  (Well not yay actually because just when I thought I had the width right I found that the 2 crane container dock and Vandy's shipping would not line up...  so there was actually a bit more faffing around before the final result.

And then finally...

I thought I would be able to extend the rail over the wharf road but unfortunately the lots are not transit enabled that way...  oh well.

I am now extending the CDK lots further to the left...  and I will have make room for that new bulk cargo lot too...   :yahoo_think:

Nice work...
I could say that container ports are usually much larger. Also the container activities are usually custered together, so it might be more appropriate to build a separate container terminal and then next to it a bulk terminal..... But hey, who said this is real life? And also: there are probably a lot of small ports or industrial areas with one or two small containerdocks and a lot of other stuff messed up in one large area.
In SC4 mainly the nice looking result is important (in my opinion). And that is very OK here.

Waiting for your next update.
